Roman Armor Costume
Whether you are adult or child turning back the hands of time, and going back to the days of the Roman Soldier, it will be an easy task when you don a realistic Roman Armor Costume.
The great part about any costume is that it allows you to be anything you want. It’s almost like dressing in a time capsule to take you back to whatever time in history appeals to you.
Take the days of the Roman era for example. Think of walking into the ancient arena as a Roman gladiator prepared to do battle to the death before a roaring crowd. Or your responsibility as a legionary following the orders of your Centurion exactly as given, for a Roman soldier would never question his superiors.
Life in Rome for a soldier was no easy task with the grueling training that one was subjected to, but it was also an era of Romance such as that which transpired between Cleopatra and Marc Antony.
All soldiers were issued armor, a helmet, a shield and a sword. They were trained to be professional defenders of civilization, and were part of a glorious military tradition reaching back hundreds of years to when Rome threw off the yoke of Etruscan royalty.
The fact that the Romans enjoyed a standing army with regulation equipment may seem normal today, but back then, most of their opponents were often gruff Barbarians who grabbed whatever they had at hand to fight with, often with no armor! Thus, the imperial armies of Rome won again and again, for centuries of battles and the expansion of their borders.
Just think, you can relive all of this and enjoy all that Rome had to offer by choosing a Roman costume that appeals to you!

The Roman Legion
Although of course the main attire is what we have talked about here, there was still much that had to be considered and kept close by for every Roman soldier. What would seem like accessories to us in today’s world could mean the difference between life and death to this valiant soldier. Items such as shin and wrist guards, breastplates of armour and, of course, helmets were the standard issue of every soldier.
Now if you are going to go back in Roman history to really make your costume authentic and to deserve the attention you are going to be getting, then perhaps a little quick history lesson may be in store here. That way you are going to come across as truly knowing what you are talking about. Here are some short definitions that will help your skirt through the evening as a very intelligent Roman.
So prepare yourself! For when in Rome, one must do as the Romans do!
Gladiator: the rock stars of the ancient world, the gladiator would make his appearance in the arena to fight to the death if need be to show his skills, valour and gain a name for himself – all for public entertainment.
Gladiatrix: female gladiators. Just as every bit as ruthless, skillful and a force to be reckoned with in the arena. Yes, they did exist!
Spartans: Greek warriors trained from birth to be valiant soldiers from the city of Sparta.
Tunic: The basic dress of everybody Romans. A simple long shirt reaching to the knees, and belted at the waist. Sounds comfortable!
Toga: What we would consider today as a wrap around in women’s attire was ceremonial garb which only male Roman citizens could wear. It was about 20 yards worth of cloth that was wrapped around a simple linen tunic.
Praetorian Guard: The permanent, personal bodyguard of the emperors, based in Rome. This soldier’s duty was one of grave responsibility, though if he and a large group did not like the emperor – why, assassinate and replace him!
So there you have a few tid bits of history to throw around to fit the picture of the Roman era!
